If you have a separate monitor you can also use Barrier. This lets you use one keyboard and mouse with two computers over the network. Because it's a local network connection it's ultra-low latency.

  • Best way to set up a virtual machine for my use case
Check out barrier (to share mouse/keyboard between both OS) and ddcutil (to switch inputs on your monitor) before spending money. You can then have a simple script bound to a key shortcut to switch between both OS.

Barrier is just like Synergy, but free - lets you drag one mouse across a display edge and onto the display of a different machine. The keyboard will follow along, so only one machine actually needs keyboard and mouse. As long as they're on the same network, they'll find one another.
  • Help please! I have a main (gaming) pc, a work/uni laptop and an old PC. I'm looking at KVM switches for duel monitor setup but need some advice please.
I use Barrier for keyboard and mouse sharing. (https://github.com/debauchee/barrier) It's fairly easy to setup, and allows you to create keyboard shortcuts to switch between machines too.
  • Use a laptop as a monitor, keyboard, touchpad
Would something like barrier work? Not clear to me exactly what you're imagining.
  • Anyone good with Dual Monitor setups?
If you want to run two separate computers like that, you can use Barrier to seamlessly move between the two with one keyboard and mouse. I use it on my ultrawide to control my gaming PC and my work PC with each taking up half the monitor when I work from home.

  • Is there any benefit in productivity on using MacOS device as second device ?
    reddit.com/r/MacOS | 2021-09-01
Despite what some say here, I work with literally the environment you described. On my first monitor, I have my Mac Air connected via HDMI and my Linux Desktop on my second monitor. To remedy between having to switch between a keyboard and mouse anytime I want to use the other machine, I use an open-source KVM program called Barrier which allows me to use my Linux keyboard/mouse to also control my Mac once I move the mouse over.
