  • Before computers, having to remember multiple passwords probably meant you had a pretty interesting life.
If you’re worried about that, then audit, compile, and self-host your own build of Bitwarden. Completely open source and free software that anyone can run and host, either on a local machine or something like Digital Ocean/Linode. Or if just auditing the code is good enough for you, use their service.

Just needed to read one document further. Here's a resource on the multiple licenses they have: | 2021-02-21
The server is actually (at least partially) licensed with AGPL which is one step further than open source. It's a kind of great license for this stuff, because it means they need to share any changes they make to the server code.

A good password manager makes a real difference. For free software look at Bitwarden or Enpass. Both offer in-built password breach checks. You'll greatly strengthen your online protection with a disposable e-mail service such as 33mail or ManyMe.
  • I just received this email. Someone's clearly been inspired
My friends know me as the more tech literate of the group and so many of show me this in worry. Usually I can trace it to a shady porn website they made an account for and a lot of the time it's their real password. It's actually quite scary but I can't do much for them other than telling them to change their passwords. Best advice here is not to have the same password everywhere and if you really can't manage that and can't be bothered with a password manager (it's worth it), at least have a second password you give to sites you don't trust.

OpenSource alone does not guarantee that this is possible. Bitwarden has parts of the code under a "not free software" license.See
