ALIEN(Artificial Life Environment) is an artificial life simulator based on a specialized physics and rendering engine in CUDA. It is designed to simulate digital organisms embedded in artificial ecosystems and to mimic conditions for (pre-)biotic evolution. It's also free, and open sourced.
Going to look into that, thanks. I've tried Thrive which I guess is more game orientated.

What game is the prime example of "Great Idea but terrible execution" ?
Thrive is another spore inspired game... but expect a long development time. The steam version supports development but I think there is a free version on their website.

Does anyone know why this happens?
The later stages are included as prototypes. This is a known issue in the game incorrectly calculating the compounds needed to reproduce and as such the bars don't match with what actually happens: https://github.com/Revolutionary-Games/Thrive/issues/3908
