Firstly, you can check out Diablo 2 mods, like Median XL, Project Diablo 2, and Path of Diablo among others to get some more mileage out of D2 since it's a favorite of yours.

there are modded d2 communities. i can recommend https://pathofdiablo.com/ which is more true to vanilla d2 with a lot of quality of life mods. i would even recommend this over the vanilla game, because it plays much better and is more balanced.

These days, if I get the Diablo itch, I just play Path of Diablo.

For Diablo 2 there are a few good mods, but I recommend Path of Diablo, it's more like a modernisation of the game mechanics, it includes better inventory and stash management, better build diversity, more balanced drop rates, and a better end game featuring maps similar to how Path of Exile end game works.

I just replayed diablo 2 a month ago, but since I don't have a windows computer, I went for the Path of Diablo[1] mod. This is an excellent mod that stays pretty close to the original experience, but makes the game a bit faster and more comfortable for the 2022 gamer.
