Looking for Raspberry pi ideas?
Depending on your goals, you can set up a nextcloud and/or samba server if your pi4 has a hdd. You can also set up a MPD server to listen music and control it from your phone. Other ideas: Kodi (media center), steamlink (gaming)... In all cases, you can secure these services and then improve your skills

Are all Add-Ons created equal re: audio-video sync (lip-sync) issues?
I don't have any other speakers but the TV speakers are amazing and the audio quality is amazing that I don't want to change it. Btw this is the issue reported on xbmc github And thr only way to fix is to have fixed audio from the settings and crappy audio quality (48kbps) and I prefer restarting my device or stop the video and restart it instead of testing this audio quality.....

Stream from VLC on kUbuntu to any device on home network
You might be better off serving your media files as files, and letting the player apps play the content themselves. I have Kodi everywhere (free and open-source), including my Android tablets, and I serve my media using Secure Shell (I mean implicitly, not as a media server). In Kodi I use the provided sftp driver to acquire the content. Kodi uses its sftp driver to list all the videos onmy server and play whichever one I choose.

The Crew not working
The Crew is a python 2 coded add-on which makes it incompatible with Kodi 19. Kodi 19 was built using python 3. If you really need The Crew, then you'd have to install Kodi 18.9 which uses the old python 2 coding. This is available from the kodi.tv download page if you scroll down far enough. You will see where it says "Older Releases" and a link to the archives. Make sure "autoupdate" is turned OFF inside you Google Playstore account (if you are using android) or it will override your system and reinstall Kodi 19.

Need help digitizing movies
my current setup involves storing all of my films on an external hdd and playing them back using kodi (https://kodi.tv/). kodi is kind of like plex/emby/jellyfin, but it works entirely locally (i think you can configure network storage/streaming with it but i havent bothered).
