  • Ask HN: Viable Alternative to Kindle and Kindle Store? | 2021-07-24
I try a variety of sources, and use Calibre [1] to manage my ebook library. First Amazon, then Barnes and Noble,, and failing any of those, libgen (and I'll buy a used dead tree copy to pair with it).

you can also use a program called Calibre if it's helpful at all, it's just an ebook managemant software, I use it to store ebooks of all filetypes on my computer and can read it directly from there. and once you make the jump to an ereader you can transfer them back and forth from the same program.
  • Tip for people with Kindles on how to get free ebooks
Anyway if you're like me and you inherited someone's old Kindle for free and don't want to waste it but don't wanna buy ebooks from Amazon, there is a free program called Calibre that can convert any type of ebook file into any other type of ebook file. You can use this to convert all your .epub files to .mobi, which is an accepted Kindle file type (at least on Kindles of a certain age. My Kindle is from 2014 and it works for me, someone with a newer model feel free to correct me if this is no longer true). This will allow you to make the most of the online free ebook databases like LibGen and 1lib/zlibrary so you don't have to bother with Amazon at all!

  • Free - eBooks Reader for Kindle Books (MOBI, EPUB) @ Microsoft Store
Another app in the MS store sale. The full version that supports all formats is also on sale for £3.99 , though imho you'd be better off getting the free version and the free format conversion app calibre.
  • IDEA: The rM desktop/phone app automatically downloads from the internet a newspaper of your choice at a designated time before you wake up. That way, you can read the daily newspaper on your rM. Also, it looks really good!
This isn't quite what you are asking for but some of this is doable via Caibre.
