We are! We started Lowdefy [0], co-founder here shameless plug, by building apps for customers. Our model is to build their back-office apps for them with no up-font dev charge, we just agree on a monthly fee. This monthly fee includes any changes and reporting in the future at no additional charge, as long as the scope remains the same. And they own the data in their database of choice.

The model is not perfect and does not work well for every type of process, but we have a few very satisfied customers. Just enough success to slowly grow our business and buy us enough free time to build and improve Lowdefy.

Currently it's working really well, like one gear turns the next. The apps we sell help us test and improve our low-code platform. The more apps we sell the more we invest in our platform and as a result all our apps get better, more feature rich and easier to maintain. Hopefully next, by building an open-source community around Lowdefy we can accelerate this cycle.

With all this said, you can optimize with tools as much as you like - most dev productivity is always lost in building the wrong things.

    We’ve created https://lowdefy.com and open-sourced it.

Over the past 5 years we’ve been building custom B2B and back office web applications. Nothing in the market had the level of customization we required both from a technical and commercial angle. So decided to standardize how we “configure” apps into a platform.

We did this by designing a schema by which to define web apps which is easy to read, write and understand, and works well with normal developer tools like editors, git and CI. While keeping it self hosted and even server-less.

Lowdefy has enabled us to rapidly deploy custom business apps like BI, CRM to MRPs.

    Check it out :) https://github.com/lowdefy/lowdefy

    news.ycombinator.com | 2021-04-01
Hi, We've built Lowdefy [0] for exactly this reason. It it is open-source, low-code and self hosted. On our team we have data analysts and implementation engineers (non-developers) creating apps in Lowdefy. With Lowdefy I would say that the minimum tech expertise required needs to be someone who can learn to write data queries.

We are currently working on SQL support and should have the first SQL connectors out next week. Please give me a shout if we can be of any assistance! gvw [at] lowdefy.com
