xhyve VS macOS-Simple-KVM

This is due to the way Windows and OSX implement docker. They both use a VM running Linux; Windows uses Hyper-V and OSX uses Bhyve. (https://github.com/machyve/xhyve)

Nowadays, docker uses runc, that is OCI compliant. Docker on macOS uses Hypervisor.framework through xhyve, and is completely macOS native. No VM is used (even under the hood) when running docker on macOS, it's native.

Serial console in terminal was nice (for me!), network configuration was trash (I think I was able to set the subnet by fiddling around with system plists? and it would revert from time to time), and I didn't have to deal with Virtualbox. I've been away from macs for a while, I don't know if xhyve works on the M1, but it might. I ran a FreeBSD vm so I could run my server code on my laptop in an environment that was like production but slower.

Docker for Mac actually spins up TinyCoreLinux VMs using xhyve that your docker containers run on top of. This is because containers borrow the host kernel, so you can't natively run Linux containers on Mac. Xhyve spawns VMs so a Linux kernel will be present.

There's also been a port of FreeBSD's bhyve to macOS for years: https://github.com/machyve/xhyve (which, in turn, is [or at one point was] used by Docker to virtualize Linux)

I've used xyhve on my Mac to have a FreeBSD VM running a copy of https://www.freshports.org/, including a copy of the database, which runs about 200GB. For dev work, it was fine. I used it when I didn't have [great] internet connectivity, for example, when on the train/plane. When upgrading packages or just doing dev work, it was great.

I'm a 30 year linux veteran and windows free for over 22. I di d have a windows vm for some time because I have some music stuff that doesn't work with linux, like a nord keyboard and some guitar stuff.

I've heard a lot of buzz for MacOS-Simple-KVM but I see there hasb't been an update in 3 years.

You could always get a regular PC laptop, install linux on it and run your macos/windows vms via https://github.com/foxlet/macOS-Simple-KVM qemu kvm, supports full hardware acceleration and should be able to do nested vms just fine, i run a macos vm on my desktop for work and a hardware accelerated windows vm for gaming

Then, i came across this tool https://github.com/foxlet/macOS-Simple-KVM. However, it seems like it's asking me to install a different package for QEMU. sudo apt-get install qemu-system qemu-utils python3 python3-pip. Thankfully, I was able to create a Mac VM with this tool.

You can virtualize mac os, but I would call it easy

I did the Windows passthrough with some problems but I got it to work and then I attempted MacOS for fun and it went down hill from there. Following this guide https://github.com/kholia/OSX-KVM I installed it no problem without passthrough then realised my 3060ti wouldn't work so I installed an old RX580 laying around and decided to passthrough that, when I did it hung, tried blacklisting the AMD drivers on host, amongst other things and I couldn't get it to work. I then switched to this guide using clover https://github.com/foxlet/macOS-Simple-KVM as I heard that might work and nope it hung again.
