better_thermostat
This custom component for Home Assistant will add crucial features to your climate-controlling TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) to save you the work of creating automations to make it smart. It combines a room-temperature sensor, window/door sensors, weather forecasts, or an ambient temperature probe to decide when it should call for heat and automatically calibrate your TRVs to fix the imprecise measurements taken in the radiator's vicinity. Is it possible to have an online thermostat that I can connect to directly rather than through a commercial server?
HomeAssistant is your resource for privacy respecting smart home. Some people have made lists of products that work with HomeAssistant (also) However, this requires you to have a home assistant server (works on raspberry Pie) in your home.

Thermostatic Valves plus Central Boiler setup questions
I simplified my original explanation a little. I actually use an add-on ( Better Thermostat ) combined with a separate temp and humidity sensor. It’s not necessarily relevant to your question about controlling the home thermostat (nest) but worth knowing about if you go down the rabbit hole.
