Tutorial for Pico8 on Recalbox?
So, it sounds like what you're experiencing is just plain old compatibility issues with Retro8, and you should file them as bugs on Retro8's issue page.
- Is Pico 8 available on RP2+?

What's the best real handheld to play PICO-8 on the go?
I'm guessing you've already seen/tried this? "GitHub - Jakz/retro8: PICO-8 implementation with SDL2/SDL1.2 and RetroArch back-ends" https://github.com/Jakz/retro8

Pico-8 on the PocketGo S30?
I found Pico-8 when I installed the ADAM distribution on my RG350M. I downloaded a cool curated romset of about 100 PICO-8 games (https://github.com/Jakz/retro8/files/5432890/cartridges.zip)

Celeste Classic Vita Port
There are projects for porting the full Pico8 engine to different platforms, but as it is a closed source project the actual process is closer to making an emulator than a port. The main one I know of is Retro8, but there are a lot of others.

#LowResNX is now available as a #libretro core.
a pico8 core is in development though: https://github.com/Jakz/retro8

Arduboy Games
Too bad we cannot 'pull' or easily convert the 200+ games from Arduboy into the Playdate. The screen looks similar in size.

[media] I spent time porting rust to the Nntendo DS
I'd suggest something like https://www.arduboy.com/ although I'm not sure anyone has got Rust working well with it.

Built a handheld game. It has 8 different games including Tetris and Snake. Powers with USB or uses AAA batteries.
If you aren't interested in the building part, I suggest the Arduboy

8bitworkshop
My personal favorite 8-bit gaming machine is the Arduboy. They combine an Atmega 32u4 with a minimum of hardware to create a surprisingly good console.
You can modify and extend it to your hearts content and there's a usable software stack and helpful community grown up around it.

need recommendations for handhelds that are their own thing and not emulation devices
How about the Arduboy? https://www.arduboy.com

My Thumbys are here!
You could look into Arduboy- same idea, credit-card sized unit so it's actually playable. It does cost more- but it's been out longer so there's a lot more stuff for it. If you buy the new FX model, it has 200 games preloaded on it. I've got that & the original kickstarter unit, they're actually pretty fun!

Playdate is a magical indie game machine
It's not supposed to be an emulation console, it's supposed to be a nicer arduboy.
