Built a handheld game. It has 8 different games including Tetris and Snake. Powers with USB or uses AAA batteries.

My personal favorite 8-bit gaming machine is the Arduboy. They combine an Atmega 32u4 with a minimum of hardware to create a surprisingly good console.
You can modify and extend it to your hearts content and there's a usable software stack and helpful community grown up around it.

You could look into Arduboy- same idea, credit-card sized unit so it's actually playable. It does cost more- but it's been out longer so there's a lot more stuff for it. If you buy the new FX model, it has 200 games preloaded on it. I've got that & the original kickstarter unit, they're actually pretty fun!

I made Tetris[0] on mine a few years back. Surprisingly, at almost the exact same time the Tetris MicroCard[1] was released, which was an officially licensed Tetris device based on the Arduboy. It was a crazy coincidence.
I still love my Arduboy! It's really fun to program on.
