I need help with EditorSpatialGizmo. Or something.
Instead of making your own tools, the SmartShape2D plugin might be your thing. It's 2D, but since you're only mentioning planes a 2D tool might work for you.

Do I even have to use tilemaps to make the environnement of my 2D game?
I started out using tilemaps for that reason. It's much quicker and easier to start prototyping levels. I now use the SmartShape2D addon for the vast majority of my terrain. I would suggest watching a tutorial about it if you decide to try it out. It's a very powerful tool but can be quite daunting/confusing at first. As the previous user said you can use a lot of different nodes though so just try experimenting.
- does anyone else struggle trying to use Tilemap?
