For actual documentation, you probably know the pandocs, but there are a lot of more specific information in the docs linked in their references, especially the cycle-accurate GB docs, the GB complete technical reference by Gekkio. You can also check the source code of the relevant test roms, like the Blargg’s test roms for more general behaviour and the MooneyeGB test suite for more specific things.

I finally wrote my first ever emulator (GameBoy)
There were multiple times where I got stuck with the CPU timings and the PPU. So I modified the Gearboy to print some extra info, like registers and timers, so I could compare with mine and figure out where it failed.

Gearboy is a Game Boy emulator. Gearsystem should work, though. Picodrive works, too, I think.

So in 2022, what reasons, if any (even minor ones), are there to use VBA-M over mGBA?
I prefer Gearboy to Sameboy. It emulates the display flicker of a real Gameboy. Gave me a nostalgia kick.
