Vpainter on godot4: what am i missing ?
The video description mentions Godot 3.2 and if you look at the source the last commit is two years ago.

Vpainter alternative for Godot 4?
I don’t know what you were looking at, but the last commit to VPainter was only 24 days ago in a branch called “4.x” so I’m pretty sure they are updating it to Godot 4! But actually answering your question, I don’t know any alternatives, I’m sorry.

Applying a texture to each vertex via a shader?
If you look for further options, look at the vertex painter can help you with doing some manual stuff.

Mesh Painter Plugin
Only took a quick glance, but what you're doing is texture painting, right? Just a suggestion: maybe you want to rename it to "Godot Texture Painter" (or similar). This way, users will see quicker the difference to vertex painting, for which there is also a plugin: https://github.com/tomankirilov/VPainter
