Syncing Kodi across multiple devices
I used to do that, now I use Plex (running in a docker container on a machine under my stairs) and the Plex Kodi Connect (PKC) to sync my Kodi database to my Plex database. Best of both worlds
- PLEX only buffering on a Nvidia Shield (high bitrate files)

There must be a better plex client then Nvidia shield!
That being said, there are other client apps for Android: you can try Kodi, and use this plugin: https://github.com/croneter/PlexKodiConnect to use it as a Plex client. It is definitely much faster than the Plex app, and the setup while intimidating, is actually simple.

Is there something not as heavy as Jellyfin available?
There is Midarr which seems to be designed for this niche. I personally think you're missing out by not trying out Jellyfin though (transcoding can be disabled).
