I'm sure there are off the shelf solutions that will integrate (hue bulbs, etc) but if you want a DIY project, and maybe one the kids could help with, you might get some ideas from the Weather Cloud I set up here.

How to use RPi Zeros as devices in my HA setup?
For example: - Fish tank controllers with reef-pi - hydroponic watering system for herb garden - multiroom speakers with phatbeat hats, mpd and snapcast - some camera's with motioneye and temp and other sensors - a Flux Capacitor , cuz why not lol
