First time downloading mods
NPC mods will depend a LOT on your personal taste, but some of my favorites are: Angelo, Isra (& Isra for BG2), Adrian, Kelsey, Xan, Ninde. This is a very subjective list, but I feel these are all well-made mods that fit reasonably well with the game. Note that if you install more than 1 NPC mod, you'll want to install this crossmod pack so that the mod characters will actually talk with one another.

If you want a challenging dungeon crawl, Tower of Deception, Trials of the Luremaster (ported from Icewind Dale), and Test Your Mettle (ported from Planescape: Torment) are fun.

And Tower of Deception is a neat dungeon-crawl - though a challenging one, and the readme warns you not to try it until you're at a point where you've got some +3 weapons.
What are some alternatives?
Baldurs-gate-dnd-3.5 - This is a WeiDu mod for BG:Enchanced edition that changes 2ed ADnD rules to DnD 3.5 with some elements taken from Pathfinder
Ascalons_Questpack - Adds several small quests to BG1 and BGII. For BGT, Tutu, BG:EE, BGII, BGII:EE, and EET.
msfm - More Style for Mages - A mod for BG:EE, BG2:EE and IWD:EE
The_Boareskyr_Bridge_Scene - A mod for Siege of Dragonspear that gives more impact to the important scene at Boareskyr Bridge.
Alternatives - Alternatives offers two new possibilities to consider when making the decision about whether to side with the Shadow Thieves or with Valen's Mistress. In addition to the traditional two, the player may now opt to side with a group even the paladins in the party could have no objection to... or he may opt to skip the whole decision entirely and set sail for Maztica. Under-Respresented_Items - This mod adds items to Baldur's Gate 2. The items come from Icewind Dale 2. Only certain kinds of items were chosen. Items were selected to flesh out smaller weapon families.
