is it worth getting a valve index in 2023? The valve index 2 will be announced soon but that means it might not be released until late 2024. I currently have a oculus rift s and I’m not interested in getting the quest 2 or the quest 3 when it comes out

Sounds good. If you're going to look into open vr I made a wiki page and an example on how to get started, because I found the official documentation to be lacking, especially when it comes to legacy bindings.
