One example where I had to use funcrefs is this little project https://github.com/aleksandrbazhin/GdPerfMonitor - you can pass your own function, which will be called each frame to draw a plot, thus enabling monitoring for anything.

The difference in framerates is explained in the README if you bothered to read through it. If you have a lot of objects with unique materials, this could improve performance on lower-end devices.
