Is OpenGL even the way to go for WPF desktop apps?
You can also embed OpenGL into WPF via GLWpfControl (https://github.com/opentk/GLWpfControl) and keep all your actual controls in WPF if you want...

How to integrate with WPF?
This lead me to look at Ogre and then bgfx. The latter sounds pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Cross-platform, open source, etc. I cobbled together a demo using SDL to create the window. Then I tried using https://github.com/microsoft/WPFDXInterop but I think I backed myself into a corner. I can't see how to make the renderer play nice with the shared surface. The demo works briefly before I get an UCEERR_RENDERTHREADFAILURE error -- I *think* it's because I just pass the window handle and bgfx is rendering to it directly.
