Startpage vs Brave search
As several comments mentioned, Searx is fantastic, and another great option is Whoogle. Both are ideally self-hosted (with the latter being extremely lightweight), but if that's not possible for you, a geographically close instance of either should do just fine.

I'm currently using Orbot (tor) and this happened when I ran a search in Chrome. What the frick?

That page is normal for Tor users, as Google blocks many Tor IPs. It would be better to use a Tor-friendly search engine instead.

The New York Times is pissed off because DuckDuckGo doesn't filter search results
...ya know, unless I can't find what I'm looking for. Or if I want local results. I mean TBH I self-host Whoogle Search but I still respect DDG for what they're doing. If nothing else, they are bringing up privacy as a human right in their marketing/messaging. That is really valuable to society and a breath or fresh air, even if I rarely use their actual products.
