Some questions
Read the endeavouros i3 config file here, it's full of very helpful comments that will explain most of the i3 config and the i3wm site will tell you all the default keybindings. Another option is to use something like autotiling which is also in the AUR.

What's the bare minimum of knowledge required before switching to a window manager ?
Here is arco's and endeavourOS's config files to get you started. Also this could be a good starting point.

Arch kde or xfce
My solution was to slap a wm. I use i3 and qtile (not at the same time lol). They are much better for me compared to kde or xfce for memory consumption. If you'd like to try a wm I would suggest i3 and use one of the preconfigured ones e.g. Arco or Endeavour which has list of packages to be installed (e.g. rofi, dunst, i3-lock etc.) so you'll get all the functionality of a DE. They even have install scripts to fetch everything needed if you require. Also you can waste months of your life ricing. It's like cocaine I tell you.
