  • blackboxwm

    A window manager for X11

I loved Blackbox's configuration, however it's been deprecated in favor of Openbox, which is WAY less friendly. BB has a modern fork which works for the most part, but expect corner-cases.

  • i3

A tiling window manager for X11

i3 is probably the most well-documented and well-supported, and has a pretty simple configuration syntax.

  • ly

    display manager with console UI

In general, it's tough to go too wrong, and with a good display manager you should be able to switch between them painlessly for experimenting with. (I like ly for a minimal setup!)
