You could always use programs that map your keys to a controller, like AntiMicroX or something.
It would appear so (Betacraft is too by the looks of it, plus the lead dev is an active member of the NSSS community), but regardless I sincerely doubt there's anything to worry about - they've both been around for years and are respected in the community. Betacraft even implements a proxy server that enables features in old versions that broke over time like sounds and music and skins. Can't hurt to be cautious though - good on you for being careful!
