  • Proton

Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components

  • Proton is a fork of wine and made by Valve. With each wine update Proton tries to update as well but keep their optimization meant for gaming. Also if you look at the pull requests from the Proton GH page, you can see that it's constantly getting new fixes for bugs that appear or try to improve the performance. The difference in the versions Steam has to offer is simply how new their fixes are. But sometimes a newer version of Proton works worse compared to an older one because for some fixes that were made it's not unusual that something else breaks on the way. That's why people try different versions of Proton for each game to find out which works best. But Valve is also very responsive, so if a bug appears they try to deal with it next.

  • proton-ge-custom

Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components

  • Another comment mentioned Proton-GE. Proton-GE is a custom build or fork of Proton created and maintained by GloriousEgg (he also had a yt-channel ). He is an experienced coder and likes to game so he decided to take make the best out of Proton to fourther improve his gaming experience. Usually his versions of Proton are released more often so they are later, and if you follow his instructions on GH it's easier to install and try.
