You have to properly configure your NTFS drive. It's not too hard. Valve does officially support this for Proton, but the first link is a better way of doing it. It also works for Linux native titles, but really there's no reason to put them on an NTFS drive. Keep in mind, if you reboot between Windows and Linux, you should move any games with native Linux versions to your Linux drive or else Steam will try to redownload the games for their respective platforms every time you switch.
