Beancount: Double-Entry Accounting from Text Files.

  • Hi all, I've been researching plaintext accounting for a little bit now and I'm interested in giving Beancount a try mainly because I'm very comfortable with python. My long-term SO and I would like to get serious about tracking our finances together as a household since we're looking to establish a budget. Our financial life isn't too complicated. We both work full time I do have some thoughts before we dive in:

  • Fava

Fava - web interface for Beancount

  • We live together so there are many expenses we share (e.g. groceries on one of our credit cards). In this case, it would be really nice to have a breakdown of expense accounts in which it is apparent how much money was contributed to it from each account. Has anyone devised a way to generate a report like this? Bonus points if it can be visualized in fava or others. I know there is a tutorial in the Docs, but that seems more for settling split expenses after a discrete event. We're more interested in just keeping tabs on who (Or which account) is paying for what over time so we can have a conversation about it in the first place.

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

    Various user contributed plugins

  • I mostly looked at the beancount API documentation, as well as source code. It's also quite possible that I looked at some sample plugins from here.
