Windows very much provides an asynchronous file API, so much so in fact that the std implementation had a race condition / unsoundness bug that allowed the caller to pass a flag that enabled a parallel read into memory after the call returned – causing use-after-free from the mismatch with lifetime's assumptions. Bug is here. On Linux the mechanism is different but still one can use asynchronous APIs and potentially io-uring will be even better. Similar problems with regards to lifetimes and soundness arise there however.
