I have no idea how to get the GOG version running in Linux to be honest, but I'm sure it's possible. I recommend the https://heroicgameslauncher.com/ launcher for GOG / Epic games on Linux though.
In a nutshell: WSL stands for Windows Subsystem Linux and allows you to install multiple Linux distributions as guest operating systems. It's similar to VMware, Virtualbox, Hyper-V and other virtualization solutions, but it has better performance since version 2 (which is default for around 2 years now) because it's more emulation than virtualization. Although it also has its drawbacks as indicates by the 2k issues on GitHub.
