Ask HN: What's the stack for your "home-cooked meal" apps?
I literally made one to scratch my itch with home cooked meals: https://www.kassner.com.br/en/2023/09/21/what-to-cook-launch...
Honestly, I don’t have “a stack”, if I’m trying to learn a new thing I’ll use that to build a new project, or if I don’t I’ll default to the most suitable option.
i.e.: What to Cook? was built in Java because I needed a refresher, otherwise I’d likely use PHP/Symfony because I could finish it quickly. If the project is non-web/fullstack, I’d default to Go. If im building something that will use React, I’d default to NodeJS+Express.
If you’re curious, i have a few write ups in the projects section of my blog

Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
I have a few:
https://www.ytemail.com/ - e-mail notifications for YouTube uploads. I was in the 0.01% that used and liked e-mails, and built this after Google killed the e-mails. If you want to use, please get in touch, I'm happy to onboard free users if the amount of notifications you'll get isn't big.
https://github.com/kassner/whattocook - Recipe chooser, but it works the other way around you'd expect. In a household of depressed people, it's common that we can't get to agree on the meal, so this project decides it for us. You can exclude ingredients in case you don't have them at home, but that's the only way you'll get a different recipe.
https://www.kassner.com.br/projects/money/ - Personal finances project that only I use. Never had the courage to open it to the world, and there isn't anything innovative in it to be worth the hassle either. Only pluses are single-binary web project and DBs are password-encrypted by default.

Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
I've been doing some modernization on an old scripting language used by the game engine I work on [1]. Added a garbage collector, simplified how internal symbols are defined, added a VS code extension with some niceties like syntax highlighting, "Go to Definition", and doc tooltips. Also recently added support for websockets and plan to tackle JSON soon.

Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Developing a new website for the open source game engine I work on. Nearly finished with it.
https://zquestclassic.com
It's a Zelda-like game engine with some 1000ish games made in it over 20 years. Used to be called Zelda Classic, but we renamed it this year.

A forum engine written in Assembly
Thanks, that was a silly oversight. Your comment is appreciated, as it saved an instruction in my game engine's JIT compilation :)

Show HN: Using C++23 <stacktrace> to get proper crash logs in C++ programs
I found Sentry's crash reporting (which uses crashpad) simple enough to configure into an existing CMake build within an afternoon.
Building Sentry/crashpad from source in a few lines of CMake: https://github.com/ArmageddonGames/ZQuestClassic/commit/3471...
And a few lines in the main function: https://github.com/ArmageddonGames/ZQuestClassic/commit/3471...

Ask HN: Examples of desktop software with 20+ years of longevity?
My hobby is working on a 20+ year game engine. Still occasionally delete DOS-only code in it. https://github.com/ArmageddonGames/ZQuestClassic

MSVC: The Devourer of Const
```
The `Hero.{x,y}` properties here are a custom fixed precision number class with some implicit conversions to int, which I suspect being relevant to the crash.
Ccache – a fast C/C++ compiler cache
https://github.com/ArmageddonGames/ZQuestClassic/commit/641d...
Using it locally too, works great on Mac, but on Windows ccache has some problems caching debug builds. IIRC the embedded debug symbols use absolute paths, so the presence of this particular flag (/Z something...) disables cache eligibility.
