OpenWrt Two Approval
What I would want to have some company to make one device that would at the same time be:
1) router
2) smart tv (airplay, chromecast, miracast)
3) smart speaker
4) smart home gateway (matter)
5) wireless charging pad
6) private cloud (nextcloud)
7) private backup (removable nvm)
8) private vpn / dns / pihole / adguard
9) mini server
Everything in a nice package and preconfigure and ideally modular (upgradable ssd, wifi).
UmbrelOS [0] is interesting but its quite expensive and its only for home server (no router, no smart speaker, smart tv, wireless charging pad). Apple TV has a great hardware and cheap but so limited for 3rd party. Wish they made it modular that you could attach magnetic speaker, wireless charging pad and had some usb for attaching 4g modem.

Why I self host my servers (and what I've recently learned)
Umbrel[0] maybe? I posted a list of related services here[1] as well, though most of them are cloud based.

Self Hosting 101 – A Beginner's Guide
Have you checked out Umbrel[1]?
You can self-host Umbrel on your own hardware[2] as well. I'm not sure if they allow for multiple nodes that can stay in sync. If (/once) they do, it'd solve for disasters / availability.

Escaping Surveillance Capitalism, at Scale
I really thought this article was going to offer a solution, not just enumerate the problems. I'm already all too familiar with the problems.
I like what Umbrel[0] is doing. They're essentially expecting that just like computing was able to move from centralized mainframes to homes, servers are poised to make the same migration.
I think they really need to solve redundancy, though. If I'm to self-host anything important on a home server, I need to know I'll have some way to use it even if my home server fails, especially if I'm not at home when it happens.
I'd love to see some kind of system where I could partner up with other Umbrel users for backups/the ability to restore connectivity. If I knew that in an emergency, I could call my friend in town or my brother out of state and there was some procedure that would allow me to connect to an encrypted backup of what I'm needing, I would feel a lot better about taking responsibility for my own system.

Cosmos vs Casa vs Umbrel?
There is also Tipi to look at and Yunohost might be interesting for you.

RPi 4 Build Recommendations (NAS/VPN/Seedbox/etc)
If you want something like that, then CasaOS is pretty great and i can recommend it, especially for a beginner. There is also Cosmos and Tipi. Yunuhost too but a bit different approach. Oh and Umbrel is a thing...

The latest umbrelOS release brings a redesigned app store for self-hosted apps
However you quickly reach the limits of what Umbrel can do, its very basic in its abilities. Of course it depends all on what you (or anyone else) wants to do with it. There is also CasaOS which is very similar to Umbrel but last i compared, Casa offered a bit more features like for example adding your own docker projects easily. There is also Tipi which i must admit i havent taken a closer look at yet. And there is Yunohost which i guess aims at a similar audience but achieves these things differently, still worth mentioning tho.
