  • Do people here run there own Nodes? What are the benefits/Negatives. | 2021-04-19
I run a node based on Umbrel. At first I did it as an educational exercise, so I can really learn about how the blockchain works while contributing to the network.

Look at Umbrel for setting up a node. Super easy. Has the Specter wallet app built in. has info and lists the parts you need to setup a node.
  • Is it possible to run UmbrelOS on other PC than RaspberryPi and consider it safe? | 2021-04-17
Well, on their github, they dont recomend running Umbrel on anything else than RaspberryPi, saying it should not be considered secure. So my question was if its possible to run Umbrel on any other PC and consider it safe. If I set up virtual machine, then its not the RaspberryPi way and therefore its not recomended.

Another thing to consider is running your own node. This way you are trusting no third party node to validate your own transactions. Very easy to setup these days the + about $250 dollars worth of hardware | 2021-04-14
I run mine 24/7 but you don't have to. It doesn't use much power/bandwidth once the initial sync is complete. Think the minimum time a day is 6 hours. You can do it on a raspberry PI and a SSD:

Which install documentation are you following? I was able to deploy Umbrel on a VM for testing by using the install details from the official github:

You potentially could flash the SD card with the full Raspberry Pi OS with desktop image and then deploy umbrel on top of that. Though that's not the recommended deployment method and most likely will negatively impact performance of the umbrel services overall so YMMV.

Consider setting up your own node, something like umbrel. It has btcpayserver as a built in app so that you can accept bitcoin and have it verified with your own node.
  • Cheapest Raspberry Pi setup?
Hi, I'm looking into getting some dedicated hardware to start running a Lightning node. Going off of Umbrel's list, it looks like it'll cost over $200 USD. Is there any way to get this cost down but still run reliably? Thanks!
