termite VS cosmic-comp

Also, regarding VTE, the author of termite (discontinued terminal emulator) expressed similar concerns about the GNOME devs. Apparently, they have little interest in making the library useful to people not working on GNOME apps: https://github.com/thestinger/termite

Termite is obsolete by Alacritty.

I simply do not want to use anything libvte based. And that's what sakura is and termite used to be.

History and experience tells a different story [1]. Never trust a library that is maintained by GNOME.

Wow, this confirms a lot of my impressions:

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but right now, there seems to be a lot of good will. I will do everything I can.

Maybe take a look at cosmic-comp it is currently in development by System76 for their own Cosmic DE. Smithay also has Anvil and Smallvil contained in it's repository, both are example implementations of a compositor using Smithay.

COSMIC DE isn't a singular thing, it's a project of several smaller projects being built on top of each other, like the cosmic-text project that'll be used for font rendering and this new cosmic-comp UI compositor project.

We hired the talent behind smithay, and cosmic-comp is based on it, which has been developed to the point where we have an early prototype with some functioning wayland-shell applets.
