Does self-hosting Standard Notes require Amazon AWS?
If you also look at the docker-compose stack that they provide, you will see that those AWS lines refer to the localstack container, simply put its faking a local AWS.
-
If Standard Notes ever shuts down, what service would you migrate to that also has syncing and is open source?
If they shutdown unexpectedly, it's easy enough to download their self-hosted repo off Github to deploy your own instance. Then you can just import one of the automatic local backups Standard Notes makes on your computer.

What's your "This saves me money because I don't have to subscribe to X" self-hosted list?
Standardnotes - Evernote started cracking down on free users, so this enabled me to avoid paying for their service

Self hosted onenote alternative without md syntax?
I like standard notes. Intuitive web and app interfaces. They have advanced editors you can install that expand the features significantly. Probably not to onenote level, but far more options than I need hah.

Limites syncing options?
Hi u/Junior-Ad-3117, you can self-host the syncing server for Standard Notes. Please see our Standalone repo on GitHub for more details. 🙂

"Unknown error" when trying to register on a fresh standalone server
Hi u/zkvvook, I just wanted to let you know that if you hear back from the dev team that the discussion will continue in your post on GitHub. 🙂

Self-hosted - invalid credentials
Hi u/zcyph, sorry to hear that. Are you able to export a backup of one of your accounts and import it into our web app while signed out (you could use the desktop app while in airplane mode if you'd like) and let us know if importing a backup works as expected? Can you share the logs here or on in the issues tab of our Standalone repo?

Unknown Error in the self host server
Hi u/sir83231, (assuming this isn't the same issue that you created), you may find some insight in the comments on this thread by a user reporting a similar error.
-
Web app won't load after docker image update
Sorry to hear that. To provide additional exposure for the issue that you're currently experiencing to more members of the community, please create a thread in our Standalone repo as well. 🙂

Why I Like Obsidian
Tried Obsidian for a while, loved a lot about it, but....mmm.
Obsidian out of the box is a bit limited; plugins are great and add tons of features, but then you start hitting issues with plugin maintainers abandoning plugins you rely on, or needing to make a decision between three different plugins that all do the same thing slightly different. Depending on your use case and expectations that may not be a big deal, but I really missed not having what I personally saw as core features not being officially supported.
(Also, FWIW, the sync service is a bit pricy for what it is. I get that it's how they're trying to monetise it, but...I would have preferred another pricing model, even if the total cost was just as high.)
I've personally switched to Trilium Notes which I'm finding nicer. One element I particularly like is that it has first class suport for notes being able to exist at multiple places in a tree simultaneously. I know it's a very personal thing, but for me personally being able to file notes in multiple locations "clicks" in a way that tags didn't.

Show HN: Heynote – A Dedicated Scratchpad for Developers
I move between machines a lot and prefer an online tool; I'm self-hosting Trilium Notes https://github.com/zadam/trilium ; this looks a bit cleaner but without syncing (or server-side storage) it misses a bunch of potential use cases.
