A programmers' collaborative for a PC port of Metal Gear Solid 3?
There are people working on decompiling and studying how all the games in the series work in some capacity. (Some examples: Metal Gear / Metal Gear Solid / Metal Gear Solid V). Decompilation is much easier said than done, Programming by itself is difficult and requires you to think in ways that aren't natural for the human brain and in the realm of programming projects; reverse engineering/decompilation is very much one of the hardest programming projects one can take on.

Systematic method to reverse engineer and rewrite DOS games
This is actually a technique I've seen used in the past for other games. For example a Crash Bandicoot 2 reverse engineering project does something pretty similar: https://github.com/ughman/c2c
What are some alternatives?
