nice! I'm working on my own Rust-on-DS project here: https://github.com/QuinnPainter/ironds, some of it may be useful to you? Mine is aiming to be an all-Rust toolchain rather than libnds bindings. I've also added tier 3 targets to the compiler (armv5te-none-eabi and thumbv5te-none-eabi) that you could possibly use?

Too bad we cannot 'pull' or easily convert the 200+ games from Arduboy into the Playdate. The screen looks similar in size.

Built a handheld game. It has 8 different games including Tetris and Snake. Powers with USB or uses AAA batteries.
If you aren't interested in the building part, I suggest the Arduboy

My personal favorite 8-bit gaming machine is the Arduboy. They combine an Atmega 32u4 with a minimum of hardware to create a surprisingly good console.
You can modify and extend it to your hearts content and there's a usable software stack and helpful community grown up around it.

You could look into Arduboy- same idea, credit-card sized unit so it's actually playable. It does cost more- but it's been out longer so there's a lot more stuff for it. If you buy the new FX model, it has 200 games preloaded on it. I've got that & the original kickstarter unit, they're actually pretty fun!
