Descent 3 Source Code
Freespace is open source.
I am not familure with the.. um.. I guess you could call it the landscape of the freespace community but this was a top search result.
https://www.hard-light.net/
and here is a github project that looks correct.
https://github.com/scp-fs2open/fs2open.github.com
And now, for free, an opinion. I enjoyed decent, but did not like freespace, I am sure there is fun subtlety to the game, but I bounces off it hard, combat in open space ended up being just these really boring circle battles. Much funner combat when you have tight claustrophobic corridors to deal with.

Are there Open Source Games?
That last one is an open source engine for a trio of existing free games, but if we count open source engines for commercial games the amount of famous examples grows exponentially. All id Software games up to Doom 3 have had their engines made open source and have a huge number of modern versions available for all of them. So Arcane Dimensions, the greatest by a mile Quake campaign ever made, was completed just three years ago and you need a modern open source engine like vkQuake to play it - even the Quake Remastered engine can't handle the huge AD maps. There's also an open source Morrowind engine, an open source Freespace 1/2 engine (Diaspora above actually runs on this), an open source point and click engine called ScummVM that runs so many old adventure games it's almost an emulator...

Dan Wentz, composer for Freespace series at Violition games, has released a remastered soundtrack of Freespace 2
If you want those, you can download them through fan-made launcher here: https://www.hard-light.net/ (scroll down until you find Knossos Mod Manager). The minimal size of the download is 3+ GB, and it defaulted the in-game resolution to 4K, which I had to change in the launcher's settings. If you want to install that, look for "Freespace Upgrade MediaVPs" in the "Explore" tab.

The Rise and Fall of the LAN Party
Recently, my friends and I recreated our old LAN parties. Went up to a cabin in the woods, brought some cheap network switches, and had everyone install OpenRA (https://www.openra.net/, open red alert), and had a blast, even with everyone on laptops (mac/win). You can still do this in 2024 and it's worth it!

Ask HN: What older games are you playing through?
After the movies, I wanted to experience Dune 2 again (the pirate sites have it, along with patches to make it playable on modern OSes or Crossover). It was arguably the first mass-market real-time strategy game. There's also OpenRA for C&C, Red Alert, and Dune 2K: https://www.openra.net/
I understand Square is re-making FF7 in a multi-part release over several years (not sure why it takes so long)? https://ffvii-remake-intergrade.square-enix-games.com/en-us/ Once it's all out, I might play through that again just for nostalgia's sake (and for the soundtrack, of course! Twenty years later, I still have Aeris's Theme stuck in my head from time to time)

OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
You can import those from ISOs: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/wiki/Game-Content but the campaign is not complete afaik as it needs to be re-built in OpenRA: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4989 (I think this is the related ticket)

Any way to play on a MacBook Pro?
Alternatively OpenRA has a bunch of C&C inspired mods: https://www.openra.net I think this way is the easiest way to get a C&C like experience on a M1 Mac right now.
