Replace the start menu which is filled with ads and widget bullshit Replace Windows 11 logo with Windows 7 logo

I've been very happy happy with https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu as a Start Menu replacement. If ads have rolled out to my Windows install, I wouldn't even notice.

Whenever I set up a new computer for older family members, despite it being windows 11, I always install open shell[1] and retro bar[2]. Between the two, I've made the operating system look very close to Windows XP visually, and they always appreciate it.

There's Open-Shell but it's not exactly a full WM replacement.

There is also Open Shell, a free and open source tool which performs a similar function.

Classic Start Menu

I use Open Shell (fork of Classic Shell) as a replacement to original Start Menu. This gives me full control over what appears in start menu - no results from internet, animated tiles, etc (I am on Win 10 though, from what I read the Win 11 is supported, but not yet officially [1]). It could be a solution to the ads appearing in start menu.

qbittorrent (qT) is a great client with equally great search capabilities. you'll want to install jackett along with it so you can search through a large swath of torrent sites from the qT search.

Some people have turned to downloading qBittorrent[0] and use 1337x.to or thepiratebay.org (to start).

At some point these apps are so user hostile that it's simply isn't worth subscribing to. Their margins on content are so low on an individual—effectively zero since a flat fee means ~infinite content—that the effect on their business is incredibly small. Especially for people who have subscribed for months but don't watch consistently.

For movies that are 5+ years old, some would say that the companies have made the vast majority of what they will and copyright is so out of control, bought by those same companies, that it's not bad faith to counter-balance it.

Back in 2022 libtorrent implemented memory mapped IO as part of v2 [1]. Unfortunately, it didn't go so well. Memory usage went through the sky, leading to performance degradation and crashing [2]. The issue is still open in the project to this day, and many programs have stuck with the v1.2 library instead.

It looks like they are headed to a multi-threaded pread implementation now [3] and someone has created a patch to tweak the current pread fallback from mmap to perform better in the meantime [4].
