I installed OpenShell and haven't looked back. It hijacks the start button, and presents something akin to some blessed combination of Windows 98's, Windows XP's, and Windows 7's start bar. Typing to find suggestions is about as logical as you could want. I don't like most of the other features that come with the tool, but that's a small price to pay for a better start menu experience.

Hard to explain, been happening since today after I installed a few apps, namely Ear Trumpet from Microsoft Store, tried installing and using WindowBlinds from a YouTube QoL recommendations video here and here but uninstalled after it didn't work, as well as Black In Black / BIB here + UltraUXThemePatcher + SecureUXTheme to try and get BIB to work (which it didn't), and finally Twinkle Tray to adjust desktop brightness like you can on laptops. My best guess is the WindowBlinds app fucking something up, or Twinkle Tray turning off my screen when it goes to black mode, seemingly coming back on when I press my keyboard or mouse, and then freezing and accepting no responses.

At the risk of being downvoted to hell, but to offer a different perspective, my answer is, that my favorite DE for Linux (not only Fedora) is... Windows with WSL(g). I'm a huge Fedora fan, have installed it bare-metal, but use fedoraremix WSL distro almost exclusively. The problem with that solution is that it requires an absurdly huge amount of memory to work comfortably, so I admit, that it is not a good solution for any system with less than 32GB of RAM.

About the folder background image, you can have a custom background image in each folder or a different background image for different folders. This can be done thanks to explorerTool In my case, I used the wave design that you can find at the bottom of Betterdiscord, and edited it to look good in my dark-themed file explorer.
