Multiplayers ?
In the sidebar for this sub under the 'other projects' section there is an entry for Cataclysm: Looming Darkness; a multiplayer rewrite of the game. As I haven't tested that fork myself I can't vouch for how complete/actively developed it is, it's probably your best bet for a multiplayer cata.

cdda online?
Cataclysm: Looming Darkness is also a thing that is in development, however, it is very barebones right now and uses a MUD in order to function. (https://github.com/stolencatkarma/CataclysmLD)

Idea for Small Scale Multiplayer
There is a version of the game being devloped as a MUD or a MUSH or something like that where the game plays out in live action on multiplayer. Like most games being developed, I don't expect it to ever go anywhere or come close to completion. But it does exist and that's impressive enough. The game systems are completely rebuilt to be tailored around multiplayer. I don't believe there is any way to connect to a public test server for the game yet, but this is the repository for it. https://github.com/stolencatkarma/CataclysmLD

TheViper: "At this point, content is enough. Screw more content, let's make the game 100% playable."
That's most likely not happening, but there is an opensource AoE2 engine that is in development https://github.com/SFTtech/openage

Openage Development 2023: April
Hey, there are a bunch of build instructions listed here in the Github repo. Dependencies for Fedora should also be linked there. If you want to see the latest stuff (i.e. the things we're talking about in the post above), you should pull from the branch in this PR: https://github.com/SFTtech/openage/pull/1505
