  • Gnome 40 (gnome-shell) is now in extra
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-04-07
It's typically installed by default on other distributions running GNOME (e.g., Fedora, Ubuntu) because I believe they package it as a dependency for GNOME Shell. gnome-shell on Archlinux only requires libibus as a dependency. There was a short period of time when Ibus was a dependency for gnome-shell 3.36.0-2, but that was changed shortly after for gnome-shell 3.36.0-3 and it's been that way since.

Arch's package here, which is 100% vanilla. I tried Epiphany on Intel and NVIDIA GPU's in the past, and my experience was always the same - absolutely horrible.

  • What Archlinux specific problems do exist when packages (like Gnome or KDE) are upgraded?
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-03-31
Arch's infrastructure is pretty open, so you can see how packages are built to answer your questions. For example, here is gnome-shell's PKGBUILD. It looks like it's a completely unmodified build of upstream. So I would expect most bugs to be gnome-related.

    reddit.com/r/openSUSE | 2021-03-24
It looks like Arch Linux have solved this by including the fix in their package. I don't know if this is something openSUSE does or if you have to wait until a new version of KIconThemes is released.

So I had to download the PKGBUILD from the repos and build it from scratch https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-packages/blob/packages/pango/trunk/PKGBUILD

  • Going barebones - Advice before the dive.
Arch builds the kernel with different config I believe, since it is targeted at a single architecture (ArchARM or Arch on 32-bit systems are not the same distro as Arch). You can check what exactly they do by inspecting the PKGBUILD of the kernel package, it's just a shell script. https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-packages/blob/packages/linux/trunk/PKGBUILD

  • Anyone having issues with enabling the modules for anbox with the zen kernel?
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-03-10
linux-zen compiles ashmem and binderfs into the kernel and not as modules to be loaded. Check out the config file for the options compiled into the zen kernel. The lines for ashmem, binder_ipc and binderfs are are set to y meaning compiled into the kernel. The section in the Anbox wiki page for loading modules applies if the kernel were built with those options set to m. I think the binderfs stuff should still apply though.
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-03-10
That bug report is old and is for kernel 5.10.12. The current version of linux-zen in the repos is 5.11.4.zen1-1 and the link in my original comment clearly shows the config options used to compile the current version of the zen kernel available on the repos. Specifally look at this commit from Feb 18 which was to turn Android support back on.
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-03-10
This is not true. Support was added back in with this commit
