ZWO's ASIair imager binary appears to be GPL-2.0/GPL-3.0 tainted and obligated for source disclosure, in addition to the libindi changes that block the use of competitor's cameras and focusers.
6) PHD2 is what's known as a 3 clause BSD license (https://github.com/OpenPHDGuiding/phd2/blob/master/LICENSE.txt), It's free and open software, like the GPL, but it doesn't assure that it remains that way, like the GPL does. So ZWO stripping out parts of PHD2 is as long as they follow. (BSD is loved by corporations because of that ability to essentially re-license it and incorporate into their proprietary stuff, and it can also go BSD to (L)GPL.)

Thinking of switching from ASIAir to laptop for imaging. What else besides the computer would I need to make this work?
Download NINA and PHD2 for management (framing etc) and guiding.

Is good software necessary?
I used APT, Sharpcap, PHD2, Stellarium, Green Swamp Server, DSS, and GIMP to get that picture of the North American nebula. There are better pictures of this nebula out there, but it's the best picture I've taken so far.
