Ask HN: Best E-Ink reader in 2024?
I have the now-discontinued Sony DPT-RP1, which I use with Jan-Gerd Tenberge’s software (https://github.com/janten/dpt-rp1-py).
If I had to replace it today, I’d buy a Fujitsu Quaderno A4 (FMVDP41), which I understand has a design very similar to that of the Sony product.

Looking into buying
Have you tried the https://github.com/janten/dpt-rp1-py utility for direct access to the Quaderno via the command line? It seems to work pretty well, though it only has basic functionality.

Any tablets that will not auto sync files and notes so they can be kept private and confidential?
There are also some 3rd party projects to run custom server that also supports some DPT derivatives. However, it is commandline based.

Right tablet with Linux? Difference between gen 1 and 2 and other questions...
The Gen 2 doesn't function as a USB flash drive, but it definitely works with Linux using dptrp1py: https://github.com/janten/dpt-rp1-py I use it myself like this. (Note that for some reason it may take a couple of tries to initially pair with your computer, but you only have to do that setup once, then it works great.) There is an option with dptrp1py to have the Quaderno appear as a disk (FUSE), but I haven't tried that. The basic command line works great though.

Best e-ink tablet for a researcher?
It does run Android but as far as I know, there is no jailbreak for the Gen 2 Quaderno yet. There is a jailbreak for the Gen 1. There is an open source tool to access the device ( https://github.com/janten/dpt-rp1-py ) including FUSE filesystem support, but I've never tried it. If you want a similar device that can install Android apps, you might consider the Quirklogic Papyr, which uses the same hardware as the Gen 1 Quaderno and is rumored to be getting a hardware update soon. But honestly, if you're getting the device intending to run Android apps, Boox would probably be the natural choice.
