distrobox
Use any linux distribution inside your terminal. Enable both backward and forward compatibility with software and freedom to use whatever distribution you’re more comfortable with. Mirror available at: https://gitlab.com/89luca89/distrobox
Now for programming tools / SDKs I highly prefer a local/user installation over a system wide one. Where possible, I use the asdf version manager. That also allows you to keep multiple versions in parallel and define for every project/directory, which version is active there. R is supported there. I didn't find TeX, but I am on mobile and didn't want to dive too deep now.
The other possibilty, that you can also easily mix with the above, is to use distrobox. You would essentially have something like WSL in Windows... just that it's Linux in Linux. So you could have an ArchLinux distrobox where you install tex and keep it up to date.
