My experience of trying to get the latest software on Linux is as confusing (annoying?) as Windows!

  • rocker

    R configurations for Docker

  • asdf

Extendable version manager with support for Ruby, Node.js, Elixir, Erlang & more

  • Now for programming tools / SDKs I highly prefer a local/user installation over a system wide one. Where possible, I use the asdf version manager. That also allows you to keep multiple versions in parallel and define for every project/directory, which version is active there. R is supported there. I didn't find TeX, but I am on mobile and didn't want to dive too deep now.

  • distrobox

Use any linux distribution inside your terminal. Enable both backward and forward compatibility with software and freedom to use whatever distribution you’re more comfortable with. Mirror available at: https://gitlab.com/89luca89/distrobox

  • The other possibilty, that you can also easily mix with the above, is to use distrobox. You would essentially have something like WSL in Windows... just that it's Linux in Linux. So you could have an ArchLinux distrobox where you install tex and keep it up to date.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
