I have a Kobo Clara (basically same as a Kindle Paperwhite) running an open source environment called KOReader. I use Calibre to manage my library once I've purchased a book and send it over wifi to my Kobo. The Kobo can also connect remotely to Project Gutenberg and basically any other source that's OPDS compatible. If I download from them straight to Kobo I can then send a copy over wifi to Calibre on my desktop. Because Calibre has a functioning content server, I can connect to it from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection.
