It sounds like inkjets printers - subsidized cheap device, but full of DRM to lock you in. BUT! They are great if you are an advanced user and willing to buy 3rd party cartridges, mess with firmware, etc.

I wonder if all the mentioned issues can be fixed by using koreader.

Moon+ Reader has a built in cloud sync function and so does KoReader although I can't say more about KoReader as I only keep that installed on my old kobo.

Here's the link I followed to set up cloud sync for reading positions/notes/bookmarks:

Calibre is a very useful piece of software regardless of what ereader you end up with, and there's this feature request about syncing back to calibre too but I haven't personally explored it. https://github.com/koreader/koreader/issues/3814

One annoying thing I sometimes run into is that if you keep wifi off, you'll have to remember to turn it to sync. But that's understandable.

I can't even begin enumerating the features. It really rocks!

    > my device didn't even cache the previous/next page... Even though there is ample time to do so while you are reading.

It is sad isn't it? The state of software. You would think all these open source pdf readers would have developed various forms of caching the expensive operations by now. After all, emmc is inexpensive. Nobody seems to be working on it. It has been like this for years. Instead of getting better, it is getting worse. Use KOReader! It's an alternative software for ereaders. It's quite easy to install. It has a mode for cropping pdfs, I find it works well for textbooks and papers. For pdfs with small text I sometimes still have to read in landscape mode.

See also KOReader [0], if jailbreaking is an option for you. The built-in column splitter works pretty well for the papers I've used it to read.

I do wish we could have support to install koreader. They do have an android version of it. It has support for multiple formats and a decent community building the application. I think Supernote can benefit in supporting to install it.
