I also find e-ink devices a lot better for long reads.

Remarkable is more geared toward handwritten notetaking. If you don't need such features and just want to read stuff, the high price is not worth it.

kobo-elipsa (and the all-new kindle scribe) have a similar large size (+stylus writing) at a somewhat lesser price.

Most kindle/kobos support koreader [1]. this "app-mod" has a superb pdf reflow [2] mode that make reading pdfs a good experience even on smaller displays (and these come with an even smaller price tag)

So koreader is the short answer. If you already have a kindle, give it a try. It is open source and easy to set up.

Dude, check out Koreader. I have a Clara too, and it fixes all the issues I had with stock Kobo software.

Hi! If you don't mind adding extra software to your kobo you can change the Ui/Reading software that the kobo comes with. Check https://koreader.rocks/

  • Is there a plugin that allows export of highlights in an outline/ mindmap format?
    2 projects | reddit.com/r/koreader | 7 Nov 2022
KOReader has a built-in plugin, named exporter that lets you export your highlights to various formats (json, markdown, text, html) and some services (joplin, readwise).

I don't use an e-reader, so take it with a grain of salt, but from what I've heard/read: you could use a kindle, but it doesn't support all file formats. It should however normally be possible to convert epub to mobi with calibre. The cheaper version of kindle has ads, but they are removable (afaik). There are also Kobo ereaders. Idk much about them, but here's a relevant post https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/yaqltv/warning_about_kobo_ebook_readers/ From a while ago pointing out potential issues. It's worth noting that theres at least one alternative OS for certain e-readers that you might be able to use, depending on your device (to eliminate certain issues and restrictions). Haven't looked into it, but it's probably more open than whatever was pre installed. https://github.com/koreader/koreader
