I have an old thinkpad t530 with 3rd gen i7 and 16gb ram. i tried to put steam OS on it and failed. can someone suggest a low overhead OS to play light games on this device?

  • With 16Gb of RAM, just about any Linux distro will be fine (I'm surprised that SteamOS didn't work well for you). But seeing that GPU, I'd recommend doubling down on the retro emulation aspect by installing something like Batocera. You should at least be able to play N64 and PS1 games just fine, maybe even Dreamcast, PS2, and PSP. Then install Steam for playing some decent lighter-weight games (indie titles and older stuff, mostly; this thing should have absolutely no problem playing Stardew Valley, for example).
