Software control is about as good as it can be. Check out the stealthburner macros for an example of how the LEDs can be utilized for animations and notifications, etc. There are also some more basic examples in the docs.
Alternatively, you can wire your LEDs to a WLED controller (typically an ESP32 or ESP8266) and use moonraker's WLED support to add them to your klipper system. These can also be controlled from gcode, but since they are driven by an external controller, they are not subject to Klipper's single thread so you can build really complex animations in WLED and just activate that saved animation from your gcode.
