There is a tool named "protonUp-Qt", which you can use to manage your GE versions and makes it more streamlined to install and uninstall them. Its available at https://davidotek.github.io/protonup-qt/, and if you have access to the AUR, you can get it from there. Highly recommend this tool.
There is a custom fork of proton called "proton-GE", which you can find here: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom. This version contains some tweaks and fixes that the latest or experimental version of proton doesn't have, and could make a game playable.
I would add sc-controller to your gaming tool kit
I recommend Feral Gamemode (https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode) for any Linux gamer. If the distro you use is based on Ubuntu (Mint, Ubuntu, etc), it is already installed. You have to enter the "gamemoderun %command%" to the launch arguments in Steam, Lutris, Heroic Game Launcher. Feral Gamemode optimizes the process accordingly. Very good.
