For Gen 3, the recommendation is to go with pokeemerald. It has more resources/tutorials written for it than firered. The pokecommunity forums for the decomps do have a lot of dead threads & outdated info, but the users that post there are generally very helpful, and the Simple Modifications thread has actually useful / up to date information. The pret discord is great, too!

i found this reddit post when searching for a day/night system for pokeemerald. and i also found OP's github, including a pokeemerald repo with a day/night branch. i'd assume it's okay to use - with credit - as CrystalDust v3 has since been released, and as the OP has since retired from pokemon romhacking. tho you might want to ask them to double-check.
